A new view of Japan

NR2154 partnered with renowned stylist and artistic director, Nicola Formichetti, to create a new fashion magazine that both celebrated and subverted Japanese culture. Distributed through Japan’s largest national bookstore, TSUTAYA, this fresh perspective on modern-day Japan attracted high-profile contributors including Richard Burbridge and Hiroki Nakamura and paved the way for young Japanese writers and photographers to gain worldwide exposure.

With Formichetti’s unique voice and mixed Western/Japanese heritage as our guide, we took an east-meets-west approach to designing the FREE identity and content pillars. Expressive, custom-designed western and Japanese typography created the foundation for a bold and versatile look that evolved with each issue, speaking to Japan’s diversity of expression.
